Bike trail cuts through Eternal City

(CNN)A decaying bike path in Rome reminds Alessandro Lacch of larger problems in his hometown and his country.

“It's both a window on the real Rome and a metaphor of something larger,” the photographer and cyclist said of his photographic series “Tiberina mon amour” (“Tiberina my love”), which captures scenes along the Tiber Cycling Lane, one of Rome's few designated bike trails.

Lacch wanted his photographs of the Tiber path, a riverside route that has fallen into disrepair, to capture a point of view that's far from the rosy picture presented to visitors.

“While tourists seem to be charmed by the dazzling lights of the Eternal City, Rome is far different: neglect, decay, abandon, Mafia,” he said.

    Photographer

Rome isn't known for being bike-friendly. There are very few designated bike routes, and 71 out of 100 inhabitants use cars, among the highest rates in Europe.

“Going around by bike is extremely dangerous due to the lack of infrastructure and maintenance-related issues,” Lacch said.

He wants to see Rome's cycling culture grow.

“My goal is to create a critical consciousness that aims to improve the public spirit and bicycle culture,” he said.

The Tiber Cycling Lane captured the photographer's interest in 2014.

The 33-kilometer (20.5-mile) path was started in 1990. It cuts the city in half, running north-south along the Tiber river from the suburbs through central Rome and back out to the highway that encircles the city.

“It is clear that the use of the bicycle is the best way to lower the level of pollution and rethink a city under the dictatorship of cars and traffic jams,” Lacch said.

Gorilla Harambe RIP *F455* 6×6 inch Decal Sticker

Gorilla Harambe RIP *F455* 6x6 inch Decal Sticker

    • Easy to Apply
    • Instructions Included
    • Free Practice Sticker
    • 7 year Premium Vinyl
    • Quick Shipping

There is no background color. The surface that you apply the sticker to will become your background color. This will be a single color sticker. This is a DIE-CUT vinyl decal meaning that the background has been trimmed off. If there is a background color in the picture, it is used only as a representation. The background color will be the surface color you place the sticker on (or clear if you put it on a window). The decal will come with clear transfer tape, so you can easily apply it to anything you like (walls, windows, cars, mailbox, mirrors, laptops, etc etc etc). I use PREMIUM Oracal brand vinyl for all decals. Application is relatively easy. Your decal will come as THREE pieces - the backing paper, the sticker itself, and the clear transfer tape. Make sure you are applying to a CLEAN surface. You carefully pull the clear transfer tape up from the backing paper, making sure that it pulls the sticker up with it (if it does not, then firmly press down on it with a squee-gee or credit card or something similar until it sticks properly to the clear transfer tape). Then you apply the sticker and clear transfer tape to whatever surface you would like the decal on. You then use a squee-gee or credit card or something similar to firmly press down once again, making sure that the sticker STICKS, and then you carefully and slowly remove the clear transfer tape from the top, leaving behind only the sticker. I have found that on some surfaces (especially walls and wood surfaces), it helps to leave the clear transfer tape on for awhile to make sure everything is sticking well before removing it. I do not issue refunds or exchanges on vinyl decals. Please understand this before you bid. Some decals are more difficult to apply than others (especially the little ones!) - likewise, some surfaces are more difficult to apply decals to.

A bike that mimics multiple sclerosis presents the disease on a new level.

What do you see in this image?

    All images via Grey Australia/YouTube.

Looks pretty straightforward, right? A classic 10-speed bike, like you might find in your parent's garage. Nothing exceptional.

But things aren't always how they seem at first glance. In fact, a quick ride on this bike would throw a lot of people off, and that's exactly why a group of Australian designers, neurologists, and advocates created it.

This bicycle was designed to mimic the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.

You may know someone who has it. (The disease, not the bike.)

Roughly 2.5 million people out there know what it's like to live with multiple sclerosis, a disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord, making it hard for the brain to properly talk to the body.

It's mysterious and often frustrating, especially considering that researchers are still unsure what causes it. That, mixed with its unpredictable nature as a disease, makes it hard for people to grasp what it's like to have … until now.

Here are five clever ways they did it:

Bike = MS? You better believe it. Here we go.

    1. This bike looks great on the outside, but the inside tells a different story.

One of the most frustrating parts of MS is that it's considered a hidden disease. You can look completely normal and healthy on the outside but actually be suffering on the inside.

It's one of the reasons many people can't understand what their loved ones are going through. Diagnosing MS is no cakewalk either; its symptoms can be so hard to see that it's hard to determine whether a person has it or not.

This bike looks sharp and ready to hit the road, just like someone diagnosed with MS. But just wait.

    2. Be prepared to feel wobbly.

With MS, the instability is real, and this bike was designed with that in mind. The makers purposely built it with crooked wheels, a misaligned frame, and balky tires to create the effect. It's incredibly hard to find your balance when you're riding, and if you took it for a spin, there would be a good chance you'd end up on the asphalt.

People living with MS could relate since they often have problems with walking and feel dizziness.

    3. You never know what's going to happen next.

Symptoms of MS vary widely from person to person, but not knowing what's going to happen or when it's going to happen is a common theme.

On the bike, the designers shifted gears, took out teeth on the rear cassette, and used heavy parts to create a jarring, unpredictable feeling when riding.

    4. The brakes, seat, and handlebars recreate numbing.

Ever sit in a position too long and your legs go numb? That's sort of what it's like for someone living with MS. Only it's not just your leg. It's different parts of your body, all the time.

Losing sensation in your feet and hands makes you feel like you have to do everything harder to make it work. To replicate this feeling on the bike, after they used thin handlebar tape with ball bearings wrapped underneath, and made the seat super uncomfortable. Hang on or sit for a while and you'll go numb.

    5. It takes so much more effort to go anywhere.

For some of us, it's hard enough to roll out of bed and face the day when we're feeling perfectly fine. Someone living with MS has to constantly fight through the day to make it through.

With all the alterations above, riding this bike is also a strain, to put it lightly.

Our bodies are machines, just like a bike.

When something is off, the body reacts and works to find a fix. With MS, there is no permanent fix, but there are ways to ease symptoms and slow disease progression with medicine and physical therapy.

Most people won't get to ride this bike, and, of course, it's nothing compared to the challenge of actually having the disease.

But this unique approach might make MS easier to understand both mentally and physically.

By improving awareness and relating it to something most people do understand (bikes!), it hopefully can allow people to see MS on a different level.

Created by cycling Paralympian Carol Cooke, bike mechanics, neurologists, folks living with MS, and Grey Australia, the campaign hopes to raise awareness for the disease in advance of the MS Melbourne Cycle in March 2016.

Transportation Department clears way for self-parking cars

(CNN)Vehicles as we know them are being revolutionized right before our eyes.

    Automatic breaking? Check.

Crash avoidance technology, like lane departure warnings? Check.

      Rear view cameras? Check.

And the federal government just cleared the way for self-parking cars to be added to the list.

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx just approved BMW's request to activate the technology in 2016 7 series models sold in the United States. The technology allows the sedans to self-park, without the driver inside.

The driver is required to first park the vehicle, turn it off, then exit the car. The driver must remain within six feet of the vehicle. Using a remote control, the vehicle parks itself using sensors and cameras. The driver can stop the automatic park whenever they want.

After reviewing and “reinterpreting” existing federal safety regulations, the Transportation Department determined the technology complies with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.

Foxx has been “reinterpreting” decades-old regulations in an effort to green-light new automotive technology that fits within existing standards. He has also encouraged manufacturers to suggest rule interpretation requests to help enable new developments in technology, the Transportation Department said.

“When the Department's interpretation authority is not sufficient, Secretary Foxx further encouraged manufacturers to submit requests for use of the agency's exemption authority to allow the deployment of fully autonomous vehicles,” the department said. “Exemption authority allows National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to enable the deployment of up to 2,500 vehicles for up to two years if the agency determines that an exemption would ease development of new safety features.”

As a strong advocate for automated vehicles, Foxx said he will continue to take a “fresh look” at old regulations.

“We are on the cusp of a new era in automotive technology with enormous potential to save lives, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and transform mobility for the American people,” Foxx said. “Today's actions, and those we will pursue in the coming months, will provide the foundation and the path forward for manufacturers, state officials, and consumers to use new technologies and achieve their full safety potential.”

Foxx made the announcement at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Thursday. He also announced that within six months, the NHTSA will work with the auto industry to develop guidance on the safe deployment and operation of autonomous vehicles, providing a common understanding of the performance characteristics necessary for fully autonomous vehicles and the testing and analysis methods needed to assess them.

The federal government also plans to work with states and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators to develop guidelines for states to use regarding automated vehicles so that there is a consistent national policy.

“We know that 80% of car accidents are due to human error. So we ask ourselves, what happens if human error was eliminated? If the technology meets its promise, my back-of-the-envelope math tells me that more than 25,000 lives would have been saved in 2015 alone,” Foxx told reporters.

President Barack Obama's budget proposal for fiscal year 2017 would provide nearly $4 billion over 10 years for pilot programs to test connected vehicle systems in designated corridors throughout the country, and work with industry leaders to ensure a common multistate framework for connected and autonomous vehicles.

      1 Traxxas Funny Car / Dragster / Sand Drag / Flysky FS-iT4

      style="max-width: 500px;max-height: 360px">

I recently purchased a flysky fs-it4 and decided I would need a car to test its functions with. This is where the Traxxas Funny Car comes in, with its high speeds and huge power consumption I could test all the telemetry functions of my transmitter. I will be using voltage, speed, and heat sensors on this car. I will also do a few changes to it to make it more "FUN". I will be using it for sand dragster function as well and the funny car body goes out the waste side for the naked look of a dragster, sorry for the short length guys but I decided to keep stock wheelbase for ease of build and super long as real dragsters would be a problem for sand rail duty. Using metal gears all over, metal gear servo as well. E-Revo 17mm hex adapters used to adapt to sand tires. Now for those that might be wondering, the Traxxas Funny car does bring these telemetry functions and then some, but because everyone already knows how that works I decided it would be a good idea how this transmitter compared as an option for those that might just get a roller chassis of the vehicle to do their own modds.

Sir Richard Branson 'thought he would die' in bike crash – BBC News

      Image copyright Virgin.Com

Image caption Sir Richard Branson posted photographs of his injuries on Virgin's website

Sir Richard Branson says he thought he was “going to die” after crashing his bike on Caribbean island Virgin Gorda.

The businessman said he was “extremely fortunate” only to have suffered a cracked cheek and torn ligaments.

Sir Richard said he was cycling down a hill when he hit a speed bump, and “the next thing I knew, I was being hurled over the handlebars and my life was literally flashing before my eyes.”

His bicycle “went flying off the cliff and disappeared”, he said.

In a post on the Virgin website, the 66-year-old said: “I was heading down a hill towards Leverick Bay when it suddenly got really dark and I managed to hit a sleeping policeman hump in the road head on.

      'Completely destroyed'

“I really thought I was going to die. I went flying head-first towards the concrete road, but fortunately my shoulder and cheek took the brunt of the impact, and I was wearing a helmet that saved my life.

“We've since recovered the crumpled bicycle, completely destroyed. My cheek has been badly damaged and my knee, chin, shoulder and body severely cut.”

      Image copyright Helen Clarke/Virgin.Com

      Image copyright Virgin.Com

Sir Richard said his assistant, Helen Clarke, was first on the scene as he was “lying prostrate on the road” and then another member of his team, George, “sprinted from the bottom of the hill” to assist.

He travelled to Miami for X-rays and scans, and later posted photographs online showing his bloodied face.

      Endurance training

The accident happened on the fifth anniversary of a fire which destroyed his luxury home on Necker Island.

      Image copyright Virgin.com

Image caption Sir Richard tweeted: “Forget my injuries (cracked cheek, torn ligaments) – I'm having to drink tea out of a straw!”

Sir Richard was cycling with his children Holly and Sam as part of his training for the Virgin Strive Challenge endurance event from the base of the Matterhorn in the Alps to the summit of Mount Etna in Sicily.

He still hopes to take part in the event.

“My attitude has always been, if you fall flat on your face, at least you're moving forward,” he said.

“All you have to do is get back up and try again. At least I'm practising what I preach – though a little too literally!”

Sir Richard made headlines earlier this week when his Twitter account posted CCTV images appearing to show Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn walking past empty unreserved train seats before he was filmed sitting on the floor complaining about “ram-packed” carriages on a Virgin Trains service.
